Meet Joe Black $7.34 The cycle of life on Earth hangs in the balance when Death becomes emotionally involved in this romantic fantasy. William Parrish (Anthony Hopkins) is a tremendously wealthy and powerful man who oversees a worldwide multi-media empire. Despite the loss of his wife, whom he dearly loved, William is content with his life, and he’s very close to his two daughters, Allison (Marcia Gay Harden) and Susan (Claire Forlaini). One night, as William is fighting a hostile takeover of his company and Allison is planning an elaborate party to celebrate her dad’s 65th birthday, William begins displaying the symptoms of a severe heart attack, and he is visited by a mysterious stranger, Joe Black (Brad Pitt). Joe is actually the angel of death, who has taken the form of a man who recently passed on to pay William a call. It seems that William is due to move on to the next world, but (no great surprise) he doesn’t want to go. Joe, on the other hand, is curious to know what life is like for mere mortals, so the two men strike a deal — William will have some time to get his affairs in order, and Joe will wait and see what it’s like to be a human being. Joe decides that he likes it very much when he falls in love with Susan, but negotiating the slippery slopes of romance is no easier for Joe than for any ordinary man. Meet Joe Black is an updated version of Alberto Casella’s play Death Takes a Holiday, which was adapted for the screen in 1934. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |

MEET JOE BLACK (HD-DVD) $15.96 This modern fantasy stars Anthony Hopkins as William Parrish, a wealthy New York City media mogul who suffers a heart attack on the eve of his 65th birthday; although he survives, he senses that his death is near. On the same day, Parrish’s younger daughter, Susan (Claire Forlani), meets a handsome young stranger (Brad Pitt) at a neighboring coffee shop and is instantly smitten. As they part, the young stranger is killed and his body is occupied by Death, who is coming to Earth to warn Parrish that his death is, indeed, imminent. Death enters the Parrish household disguised as Joe Black, the handsome stranger, and although Parrish understands Death’s intentions he lets the family believe that Joe Black is a young business associate. Susan is shocked to find the familiar young man at her family dinner that evening, and, as she begins a passionate love affair with the debonaire stranger, she has no idea that she has fallen not for the young stranger from the coffee shop but for Death himself. In an effort to prolong his life and his daughter’s happiness, William agrees to take Joe on a tour of human life that includes board meetings, family parties, and, ultimately, romance. As long as Joe falls in love, Parrish remains alive. This version was inspired by the Alberto Casella play DEATH TAKES A HOLIDAY and the subsequent 1934 film. |

The Trumpet Kings Meet Joe Turner $9.58 This album features a most unusual session. Veteran blues singer Joe Turner and his usual rhythm section of the mid-’70s (which includes guitarist Pee Wee Crayton) are joined by four notable trumpeters: Dizzy Gillespie, Roy Eldridge, Harry “Sweets” Edison, and Clark Terry. On three blues (including the 15-minute “I Know You Love Me Baby”) and “Tain’t Nobody’s Bizness If I Do,” the group stretches out with each of the trumpeters getting ample solo space. It is not a classic outing (a little more planning and better material might have helped), but it is colorful and unique enough to be easily recommended to straight-ahead jazz and blues fans. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi Performers: Big Joe Turner – Vocals; Charles Norris – Bass; Clark Terry – Trumpet; Dizzy Gillespie – Trumpet; Harry “Sweets” Edison – Trumpet; Jimmy Robins – Piano; Pee Wee Crayton – Guitar; Roy Eldridge – Trumpet; Washington Rucker – Drums |

The Golden Classics: Little Joe & the Thrillers Meet the Schoolboys $10.38 Nice mixture of novelty tunes, down-home blues, R&B, doo-wop, and jump material featuring the lightly regarded but good vocalist Little Joe Cooke and the Schoolboys, not a great singing group but a solidly professional one. If this is still in print, it’s well worth hearing. ~ Ron Wynn, Rovi |

Meet the Jazztet $31.44 Although this CD has the same program as the original LP, it gets the highest rating because it is a hard bop classic. Not only does it include superior solos from trumpeter Art Farmer, trombonist Curtis Fuller, tenor saxophonist Benny Golson, and pianist McCoy Tyner (who was making his recording debut) along with fine backup from bassist Addison Farmer and drummer Lex Humphries, but it features the writing of Golson. Highlights include the original version of “Killer Joe” along with early renditions of “I Remember Clifford” and “Blues March.” This was Fuller and Tyner’s only recording with the original Jazztet, and all ten selections (which also include “Serenata,” “It Ain’t Necessarily So,” “It’s All Right With Me,” and “Easy Living”) are quite memorable. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi |
