Good Sports

The four key attributes of successful sports coaches

Sports coaches often have a lot that is asked of them, not only are they there to train players and athletes but they need to be a lot of other things too in order to be a success.  A good sports coach is not just the coach who has the most successful team.  In many cases a sports coach will be aiming to have a team of players that enjoy the sport they’re playing. There are many things that a great sports coach needs to be but in this article I am going to cover just four of the key areas which you need to excel at in order to be highly regarded: A teacher When starting a sports team or teaching young athletes initially you will be teaching your team the basics of the game.  Much of this will be explaining the rules and starting to assess which player works best in each position on the pitch or court.  The key point to remember when becoming a coach is that you need to be an understanding teacher to your athletes.  If there is a problem or an athlete doesn’t understand where they are going wrong, yelling at them is not going to help matters but taking time to explain where they’re going wrong will. A leader Obviously any team needs a leaderand the coach should be a source of inspiration for the team and help drive them to success.  Without a leader any team will suffer from a lack of purpose or direction.  In sports the leader needs to inform the team of strategies, formations and other tactics that will help them succeed.  A manager that is unable to do this will soon see their team look to him or her for answers and when they don’t get any then the team as a whole will suffer. A Competitor First and foremost the coach needs to have a desire to win; a defeatist coach will not inspire his or her team to aspire to greatness.  Quite often a team’s players will look to their coach for help or advice. If they show little passion or drive then the players may think that if the coach isn’t bothered then why should we?  On the Other Side of competitive spirit you should also be gracious in victories and defeats. Maintaining a professional approach to your games will show your team how they should behave and conduct themselves. If you are a sports coach and don’t want to suffer unwanted expenses then sports coach insurance such as football coach cover is a responsible way to protect you, your equipment and your team.

Good Sports

Good Sports

$7.99

Exhilarating, all-new, kid-friendly rhymes capture the range of emotions, from winning to losing to the sheer joy of participating, that children experience as they discover the games of their choice. Jack Prelutsky, a virtuoso at making poetry fun for the elementary school crowd, includes in this inspired collection poems about baseball, soccer, football, skating, swimming, gymnastics, basketball, karate, and more. His signature lighthearted humor in verse that trips off the tongue is coupled here with the 2006 Caldecott Medal winner Chris Raschka’s lickety-split, stylized (and stylish) watercolors. Every page is a blaze of color and motion. Whether Good Sports will create good sports remains to be seen, but it will prove to young boys (and girls) that reading poetry can be fun. One of Sony Music’s ten-track budget-line S.O.U.L. compilations, this disc functions as a decent sampler of Deborah Cox’s first three albums and earlier dance remixes. As is the case with the majority of the S.O.U.L. discs, it’s no substitute for a proper anthology since it misses some of Cox’s most notable songs. Among the highlights here are the Top Ten R&B hits “Sentimental,” “Nobody’s Supposed to Be Here,” and “We Can’t Be Friends,” along with the David Morales mix of “Who Do U Love” and the Chanel Club edit of “Absolutely Not.” ~ Andy Kellman, Rovi

Soul

Soul

$15.18

Although he worked in funk and blues bands early in his career, Seal is by no means a classic soul singer. He’s been virtually everything else, starting with house music in his native London, and later turning to various flavors of adult contemporary and pop music. But the power and sincerity of his voice is indisputably great, which makes him a natural to sing soul music — where passion and conviction are prerequisites. Soul, his tribute album to the great soul songs of all time, is a sincere, well-considered affair, which comes as a small surprise considering the usual type of tribute album (with an easy-to-market concept and an easy-to-digest list of songs). It’s the height of ambition not only to cover “A Change Is Gonna Come,” Sam Cooke’s landmark of hopeful triumphalism, but to place it as the opening song. Seal’s version isn’t exactly innovative, but he carries it over well. His other choices fall into either of two slots: the inspirational ballad or the sensual love song. Examples of the former come with Curtis Mayfield’s “People Get Ready” (another civil rights anthem to place alongside “A Change Is Gonna Come”), James Brown’s turgid “It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World,” and Ben E. King’s “Stand by Me.” (The last is the only unwise song selection; it’s practically impossible to wring anything new out of that standard.) The other category, the sensual love song, includes Otis Redding’s “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long,” two of Al Green’s hits, and one from the Philly soul canon (“If You Don’t Know Me by Now”). What makes Soul an overall success isn’t just Seal’s caressing vocals and obvious knowledge of how to interpret these songs faithfully without drifting away; it’s the subtle yet effective production work of 15-time Grammy-winning producer David Foster. Although his work of the 2000s for Michael Bublé and Josh Groban wasn’t going to instill hope in the hearts of listeners, he does plenty of good work here, with earthy, organic arrangements and funky beats that are slightly clipped for a contemporary feel. Wisely, he fills in just a few of the portions of each song, relying on most listeners’ familiarity with these classics to fill in the gaps. ~ John Bush, Rovi Performers: Angela Fisher – Vocals (Background); Angie Fisher – Choir, Chorus, Vocals; Brandon Winbush – Choir, Chorus, Vocals; David Daughtry – Choir, Chorus, Vocals; Jason Moralis – Choir, Chorus, Vocals; Keith Allen – Choir, Chorus, Vocals;

David

David

$11.98

The sole album from six-man-and-a-woman Canadian band David is one of those wonderful, flawed surprises from the era, an overreaching blend of orchestral, soft pop with light psychedelic and soul touches that doesn’t quite come together, but is full of exquisite music nonetheless. The intraband songwriting, the majority of it by Ted Grimes, is a mixed lot of varying caliber, but the finest songs — and those make up at least half the album — are truly stellar. The two Francis Webster contributions are highlights. “Never Been in Love” is a moody, psych-tinged folk-rock beauty, gorgeously produced and featuring stunning, ethereal harmonies that descend into quasi-medieval gothic chants and are goose pimple-inducing when they mix with the track’s prominent trumpet. His “Cup of Tea” is a romantic, country-picked tin pan alley tune that sounds not unlike Paul McCartney’s most sentimental, show tuney acoustic efforts. David never outright falters, but their writing does at times lapse into prosaic melodies, as on “Lovely Lady,” a ballad as faceless as its title. At other times the results are merely quaint (“Flight of the Egyptian Army,” a fine “Peter Gunn”-style instrumental that, nevertheless, is not nearly as esoteric as the title implies) or, on one occasion, simply embarrassing. “Because I’m Black,” while musically a lovely piece of swaying pop/rock, bites off more than it can digest lyrically. It is admirable as social commentary, but the premise — a black child confusedly questioning the racist mentality — is ridiculous coming from a lily-white septet. Then again, it’s not quite as ridiculous as it first seems. One of the most fascinating traits of the album is the completeness with which horns are incorporated into the arrangements on songs like the whimsical “Little Boys” and the sensational “Descension,” a trippy slice of psychedelically inclined pop that brings to mind both the Vejtables and Left Banke, and pre-dates the sound of Chicago by more than a year. Other rock combos like Blood, Sweat & Tears and Love were experimenting with horns at around the same time, and even beforehand, but brass actually comprised an essential part of David’s repertoire, somewhat novel for 1968. The primary inspiration seems to have come from American soul music, especially if the last two songs on the album are any indicators. The loopy “Alvin J. Ashtray,” with its deep-groove bassline and a fine lead vocal from Deborah Kelly, and the sweet duet “Take My Hand” actually predict, convincingly, the funky urban soul of the early ’70s — a shock considering the source and recording date. Even if a few of the album’s more precious moments haven’t aged so well, David is more than a mere footnote to the late-’60s scene. It is an unjustly forgotten bridge between the harmony-based pop of that decade and the gritty city soul to come. ~ Stanton Swihart, Rovi Performers: Ray Lawrence

Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery

Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery

Less a parody of the early James Bond film than a parody of the films that parodied the early James Bond films, Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery stars Mike Myers as Austin Powers, by day a hipster fashion photographer in mid-’60s swingin’ London and by night a crime-fighting secret agent. Austin’s wardrobe is pure Carnaby Street at its most outrageous, his vocabulary is crowded by the cool lingo of the day (“Groovy, baby! Yeah!!”), and he’s irresistible to women, despite the fact that he can be charitably described as “stocky” and has teeth that strike fear into any practicing dentist. When his nemesis, the arch-enemy Dr. Evil (also played by Myers), has himself cryogenically frozen and sent into space, Powers also has himself put on ice so he can be thawed out when Dr. Evil returns. Come 1997, Dr. Evil returns to Earth and is back to his old tricks, so Austin is thawed out and returned to active service — though he soon discovers his style doesn’t play so well 30 years on. The supporting cast includes Elizabeth Hurley as Austin’s sidekick, Vanessa Kensington; Michael York as his boss, Basil Exposition; Robert Wagner as Dr. Evil’s assistant, Number Two; and Seth Green as Dr. Evil’s troubled son, Scott Evil. Ming Tea, the swingin’ pop band that periodically backs up Austin, includes real life pop-rockers Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs. Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery was a mild box-office hit but an even bigger success on home video, which led to the 1999 sequel, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

“Walking to New Orleans” might be a more touching song post-Hurricane Katrina than it ever was in 1986. With thousands of New Orleanians displaced across the United States after the hurricane lay wreck across much of the gulf coast in August of 2005, the song offers comfort, though bittersweet, to those whom, even as the years pass, will still not be able to return to their homes. “Walking to New Orleans” accompanies “Blueberry Hill,” “Ain’t That a Shame” and other Fats Domino hits on Live from Austin, TX, released nearly a year after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. Recorded live for Austin City Limits on October 22, 1986, Fats Domino’s “Live from Austin, TX” is one of the best live recordings available from the artist. Released 20 years after it was recorded, Fats Domino fans should rejoice. From the nostalgic charm of the songs featured to the impeccable production quality, Live from Austin, TX is a treasure. Somehow, the album captures Domino’s charismatic presence to the point where it seems to pluck his smiling, plump self up from his piano bench and put him right next to the listener. The heavy horn section in each song is a complement to Domino’s rich vocals and Southern charm. Released post-Hurricane Katrina, the album perhaps has more meaning today. Fats Domino is an icon — one among many — of 20th century New Orleans music. Though some might say the food is king, music is essentially New Orleans’ greatest export. Therefore, one of the most painful blows dealt by Katrina to the Big Easy was the displacement of thousands of musicians, many of whom had lived in New Orleans their entire lives and used the city as a Muse as well as a life blood. In Katrina’s aftermath, many of the city’s quintessential musical artists, like Irma Thomas and Doc Watson (as well as those lesser known outside the region), were forced to relocate throughout the United States. Domino stayed. In the days after the hurricane, the then-77-year-old musician had to be rescued from his home in New Orleans’ Lower Ninth Ward; one of the areas hardest hit by flooding after levees failed. In 2006, Domino was chosen as a headliner for the first post-Katrina New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. The event was remarkable, and the choice of Domino as the artist to be featured on the official festival poster extended the sense of pride felt by New Orleanians for their city. Unfortunately, when it came time for him to perform, it was announced that he was too ill. Instead, Lionel Richie was to take his place. Disappointment was as thick as the humidity, but Domino did take the stage, if only to wave to the audience. He might not be feeling up to performing live at this stage of his life, but thankfully Live from Austin, TX provides an exceptional listening experience that is not subject to natural disaster. ~ Megan Frye, Rovi Performers: Carlton McWilliams – Guitar;

Guy Clark is a fine singer and a masterful live performer, but he’s a songwriter first and foremost, and the best thing about seeing the man on-stage is hearing him wrap his vocal chords around his beautifully crafted stories, which he relates with a sense of depth and detail no one else can quite match. Live from Austin, TX isn’t the first or the best live disc from Guy Clark (that honor in both categories goes to 1997’s Keepers), but it does capture about an hour of Clark delivering 14 of his songs for an appreciative audience in his home state, with low-key but effective backing from violinist Stuart Duncan and bassist Edgar Meyer, and it documents Clark in great form. On this set, recorded during a taping of the television show Austin City Limits, Clark is a smart enough showman to throw in a few crowd-pleasers, such as his minor hit “Homegrown Tomatoes” and its sibling “Texas Cookin’,” but for the most part he doesn’t shy away from the deeper and more personal material in his catalog, such as “Randall Knife,” “Immigrant Eyes” or “Texas 1947,” and here you can hear the common thread between them. Clark’s songs are made of the stuff of human lives and whether they aim for laughter or tears, they speak of emotions that most everyone has confronted at one time or another, and in language that is both artful and straightforward. There aren’t a lot of artists who can write like Clark, and fewer still who can share their songs with the same simple eloquence; if the opportunity to see him work his magic in person doesn’t present itself often enough for you, this disc will serve as a fine reminder until he arrives in your town again, and it’s a welcome souvenir for those who do get to hear him in person on a regular basis. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi Performers: Stuart Duncan – Fiddle; Edgar Meyer – Bass; Guy Clark – Guitar, Vocals
