MGM has assembled another fun pairing for students of schlock with this disc, which pairs the 1980’s cable favorite Troll with its in-name-only sequel from the 1990’s, Troll 2. Both films are presented in widescreen, anamorphic transfers that look surprisingly sharp and colorful for such low-budget fare. Troll boasts a Dolby 2.0 Stereo mix while Troll 2 receives a mono soundtrack. The stereo mix of Troll has little to offer in the way of showy effects but both soundtracks are as crisp as they can sound. Extras are limited to a trailer for each film. It would have been nice to hear more about these odd productions but one can’t complain too much when receiving quality transfers of two films on one disc for a nice budget price. Thus, this pairing of Troll and Troll 2 is another amusing entry in MGM’s Midnite Movies line and a solid pick for fans of goofball b-movie fare. ~ Donald Guarisco, All Movie Guide

When I was very young, my grandfather’s cousin Sue relayed a tale about an American woman friend who was living in London as an ex-patriate for a little bit. An issue that came up for this purpose woman was her fear that she instinctively used an American approach to apologies when riding the London “Tube” rather than the British approach. So whenever she accidentally stepped on someone’s foot or bumped into someone over the Tube, she automatically claimed, “Oh, excuse me! ” The British, she observed, always appeared to say simply “Sorry! ” inside same situation. Months flushed, and then one day when she happened to step for a stranger’s foot, she abruptly said, “Sorry! ” along with the other woman turned to help her and said, “Oh, excuse me! ” We remembered this story while reading a write-up by Xiaowen Guan, Hee Sunshine Park, and Hye Eun Shelter, called “Cross-cultural difference in apology” inside January 2009 edition with the International Journal of Intercultural Associations, or IJIR. Like Cousin Sue’s friend, these three researchers asked people in the states, China, and Korea to consider the situation of going on someone’s foot in the train or bus, and their expectations about i’m sorry. Though it can be amusing you just read a very academic analysis of an everyday behavior, it is interesting to think about why we apologize along with the role culture plays within this. After categorizing apologies according to the intent, desire, obligation and norms of the one apologizing, Guan and colleagues put forth some hypotheses about precisely how culture influences apologies, and learned from them research that they have been wrong! The experts had supposed that apologies is more common in collectivist societies than in individualistic versions, but in fact, the Americans inside study showed a better tendency to apologize as compared to either the Chinese and Korean study participants. Though someone might unconsciously step on another person’s foot over the train or bus in all of these cultures, the variations in response don’t discover a method to relate to how individualistic or collectivist will be the people involved. In the three possible other explanations they provide: (1) that Americans don’t ride general public transportation much so don’t move on others’ feet once in a while; (2) that this American sense of personal space makes this accident more offensive to your partner; or (3) that the lower context US culture demands more of an spoken apology; My partner and i vote for number 2. Living in New York and riding the subway day-to-day, it certainly feels to be the norm that both the person stepping on the foot and also the person stepped on will immediately apologize: the one for stepping to the foot and the other for being in the wrong place when your partner was stepping. Sometimes any time this doesn’t happen, it is possible to hear a loud obtain an apology, using roundabout communication (a yowl of pain, for example) or direct communication (“Watch where you’re intending! You stepped on my foot. You could at least apologize. “) Ritual apologies In such a New York, and very likely USA context, there can be an enforced norm to apologize quickly for any accidental invasion of personal space.
