The Best of Jimmy Dean $5.58 Released within a year after Collectors’ Choice’s comprehensive retrospective The Complete Columbia Hits & More, Columbia/Legacy’s 2004 16-track release The Best of Jimmy Dean is nine cuts shorter than that collection but four songs longer than the classic 1966 Greatest Hits. This means it’s not as complete as the best collection on the market, but it’s more generous than the compilation that, as of the turn of the century, was still the best Jimmy Dean collection yet assembled. In fact, The Best of Jimmy Dean isn’t all that far removed from Greatest Hits, since it shares all but one of the LP’s 12 songs (the missing tune is “The Farmer and the Lord”), which also means that it isn’t quite as chart-bound as the Collectors’ Choice disc. While The Complete Columbia Hits & More remains the choice for serious listeners, it’s a bit harder to find, and the songs exclusive to it will not be missed by the average listener, making this a good summary for most. For the record, the “Big Bad John” on The Best of Jimmy Dean is the “big, big man,” not the “hell of a man” version of the single. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi |

The Best of Dean Martin [Cema] $5.58 Issued by Capitol Records’ discount label, this 12-track, 32-minute Dean Martin compilation contains most of his hit singles of the 1950s, including “Memories Are Made of This,” “That’s Amoré,” and “Return to Me.” (The 1989 Capitol Collectors Series album is more complete; it is also more expensive.) Of course, that accounts for only about half of his best and most popular work, the other half having been released by Reprise Records in the 1960s. Consumer advisory: The version of “You’re Nobody ‘Til Somebody Loves You” heard on this disc is not the hit recording, which was done for Reprise in 1964. ~ William Ruhlmann, Rovi Performers: Dean Martin – Vocals |

Classic Dino: The Best of Dean Martin $11.87 Substituting the 2004 Dino: The Essential Dean Martin — which is now expanded to two discs as of 2011 — as the go-to single-disc Dean Martin collection — the 2011 collection Classic Dino: The Best of Dean Martin is a short and sweet 14-track collection of Martin’s standards. All the big hits are here — “That’s Amore,” “Ain’t That a Kick in the Head,” “Memories Are Made of This,” “Volare,” “Return to Me,” “Everybody Loves Somebody,” “You’re Nobody ‘Til Somebody Loves You”– albeit the latter is an early non-hit version — which is enough to make this a satisfying hits collection for most casual listeners. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi |
