Alice in Chains $7.17 Dispelling rumors of their demise due to Layne Staley’s heroin addiction, Alice in Chains is a sonically detailed effort that ranks as their best-produced record, and its best moments are easily some of their most mature music. Alice in Chains relies less on metallic riffs and more on melody and texturally varied arrangements than the group’s previous full-length albums, finally integrating some of the more delicate acoustic moods of their EPs. The lyrics deal with familiar AIC subject matter — despair, misery, loneliness, and disappointment — but in a more understated fashion, and the lyrics take on more uplifting qualities of toughness and endurance, which were missing from much of their previous work. The consistent visceral impact Alice in Chains lacks in comparison to that previous work is partially made up for by the skilled production and songs like “Grind,” “Brush Away,” “Over Now,” and the hit ballad “Heaven Beside You,” which are among the band’s best work. Still, in spite of its many virtues, it’s hard not to feel a little frustrated with the record, as though, given those qualities, it should have turned out better than it did — there are some slow spots where the songs are undercrafted and not especially memorable, and those moments can make the band sound uncommitted and distracted. Almost Alice $11.83 As part of the marketing campaign for the Tim Burton-directed Alice, the Walt Disney Company commissioned this various-artists album, which might as well be called “Songs from, Inspired by, or Related to Alice,” but is instead dubbed Almost Alice. The idea was to have a collection of pop/rock performers come up with material having something to do with Alice in Wonderland, including, as the lead-off track, Avril Lavigne’s “Alice,” which actually plays under the end credits of the movie. Lavigne’s song is a typical piece of self-assertive adolescent pop/rock, with its tag line “Don’t you try to stop me,” just the sort of thing to be chanted by a pre-adolescent who doesn’t want to go to bed. Like many other tracks here, it seems ideally suited for heavy rotation on Radio Disney. The songs tend to have sledgehammer hooks as simple as schoolyard chants, all the better to be bellowed from the backseats of mini-vans across America. There are a few oddities, however. The Cure’s Robert Smith, one of several singers moonlighting from his group (there’s also a duet by Mark Hoppus of blink-182 and Pete Wentz of Fall Out Boy), turns in a cover of the Sammy Fain/Bob Hilliard song “Very Good Advice” from the 1951 Disney animated film Alice in Wonderland, and Grace Potter & the Nocturnals perform a version of “White Rabbit” close to Jefferson Airplane’s 1967 original. Alice & Friends $11.98 After Box Elders’ 2008 Grotto Records 7″, the energetic garage rock trio from Omaha gained respect on the indie circuit while touring the U.S. With two distinctly memorable characters in the group — Clayton McIntyre, a singer/bass player who resembles a Dogtown Z-boy (and often appears on-stage in a cape and biker shorts or a loincloth), and Dave Goldberg, a multi-instrumentalist who somehow plays drums and keyboards simultaneously with astounding efficiency — Memphis’ Goner Records took the bait and signed the band just as rumors circulated that the group was potentially signing to Matador. Box Elders’ first full-length, Alice & Friends (named after the group’s favorite Korean vegan BBQ), is a step up from the low fidelity of their first outing, but only slightly. Set in their basement again, instead of recording under the supervision of the Shanks’ Steve Sampley to a four-track, the threesome recorded the album by themselves after upgrading to an eight-track tape recorder. As the lack of a digital audio workstation and the stone-walled environment might suggest, it’s another lo-fi, fuzzy concoction of washed-out sonics, but it’s not as grating on the ear as say, Times New Viking or Eat Skull. Instead, the sound’s a little closer to King Khan & His Shrines, amply drenched in dirty analog and ’60s melodies, with retro touches like Farfisa organ fills and clean guitars bleeding in the red. The hit of the record, “Hole in My Head” makes a return appearance, but the songs “Alice & Friends,” “Death of Me,” and “Stay” are equally poppy. Hank takes a gig rewriting dialogue on the zombie sequel but threatens his job when he hooks up with a horny woman with close ties towards the film’s female lead; Marcy tells Stu she’s pregnant but not that the baby is sometimes Charlie’s.

Sophisticated and unique, this comedy centers on novelist Hank Moody (David Duchovny) who struggles to boost his 12-year-old daughter Becca (Madeleine Martin), while still carrying a torch for his ex-girlfriend Karen (McElhone). His obsession with truth-telling and self-destructive behavior drinks, drugs and relationships are both destroying and enriching his career.

Comedy-drama television series doesn’t always get any better than this, than sunning on your duvet and just watching TV all to yourself. Put within a protagonist named Hank Moody played by David Duchovny who is a depressed novelist who moves to California together with his writer’s block and complicates his relationships with longtime-girlfriend Karen, played by Natascha McElhone and her daughter Becca, after this you’ve got the television series Californication. The TV series’ other main characters are Charlie Runkle, Marcy Runkle, and Mia Cross.

Season 4 had its pilot episode on January 9, 2011, as well as season unveil with Hank who bails out of jail bond after being arrested for assault, Charlie then notifies him of his new celebrity status after word unfolded that he entitled “Fucking and Punching”. Hank then goes home to his estranged wife Karen, attends a meeting to discuss the film adaptations of his book, where he accepts all assignments of adapting the script to himself.
